Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

This is a good fit if you want a short, active outing from Reykjavik rather than a full-day excursion: the ride heads toward Hafrafell for views across the capital region, and the listed total duration is 2 hours 30 minutes. My advice is to decide first whether you want to share an ATV or ride alone, then plan your pickup carefully. The ride itself is the main event; transport and gearing up take part of the outing too.

Who I’d recommend it for

Choose this if you like the idea of driving across varied terrain and earning a mountain-top outlook, but have only a few hours to spare. The route description names views toward Faxaflói bay, the capital region, Esja and the Bláfjöll range, so the appeal is as much scenery as speed. I’d be less inclined to recommend it if you’re looking for a quiet sightseeing drive: this is an ATV activity, and the description emphasizes a thrilling ride.

The listing describes the activity as suitable for all fitness levels, but driving has its own requirement: you need a valid driver’s license. Passengers can be as young as six according to the additional information, while the ticket age bands begin at eight; because those details differ, I wouldn’t rely on the lower age without clarifying it before planning around a child.

Choose your seat before booking

The shared option puts two people on one ATV; the single-rider option gives you your own vehicle. I’d choose shared if you’re travelling as a pair and are both happy to ride together. It’s not simply a matter of preference for solo bookings: the shared option requires at least two participants, and an odd-numbered group needs one person to book single rider because the vehicle fits two at once. If controlling your own ATV matters to you, single rider is the clear choice.

Allow for the pickup, not just the ride

The total listed duration is 2 hours 30 minutes, while the overview describes a one-hour ATV adventure and the inclusions list 1.5 hours. I’d plan around the total duration rather than treating the ride length as the time commitment. Pickup starts before departure and can take up to 30 minutes. Central Reykjavik hotels in no-pickup zones require you to walk to a designated bus stop, usually described as a 2–5 minute walk from the hotel. If you prefer to drive yourself, the basecamp instructions say to arrive 15 minutes early.

A practical trade-off

Pickup is convenient, but it isn’t necessarily door-to-door: some central hotel locations require a separate walk to a bus stop. Gear including a helmet, gloves, overalls, ski mask and rain gear is included, while food and drinks are not. I’d bring your own refreshments if you’ll want them afterward, and consider whether you’re comfortable with a group outing: the ATV group maximum is listed as 20.
