Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
A three-hour whale-watch from Reykjavik’s Old Harbour gives you time on Faxaflói Bay, with the coast and small islands as part of the search. I’d choose it if watching for wildlife from the water appeals as much as the chance of a sighting. The important planning point is that this is wild nature: no boat can promise whales, and sea conditions can shape the experience.
Who I’d recommend it for
This suits you if you’re happy to spend a substantial part of a day looking for wildlife and can enjoy the bay scenery even if sightings are elusive. Minke and humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises are among the common sightings described for the route; orcas are possible, not assured. I think it’s a better fit for curious, patient travellers than for anyone who needs a guaranteed wildlife encounter or a completely predictable outing.
Choose the pickup option that fits your day
There are two practical choices: arrange your own arrival at the Old Harbour, or select the option that includes pickup and return drop-off from eligible central Reykjavik hotels or official bus stops. I’d choose pickup if getting to the harbour is the awkward part of your plans; otherwise, meeting there keeps the logistics simple. For the harbour option, check in at Old Harbour House 30 minutes before departure. The pickup option starts up to 50 minutes before departure, so be ready outside at your selected stop.
Plan for a full, open-water outing
The cruise lasts three hours and sails from the Old Harbour among islands in Faxaflói Bay and along Reykjavik’s coast. Bring warm layers: blankets are available, but that’s not a substitute for clothing you can adjust on deck. A restroom and onboard Wi-Fi are listed, and drinks and snacks are available to purchase. I’d leave some flexibility around the excursion because weather can force a cancellation; the stated policy is to notify passengers at least two hours before departure in that case.
Be comfortable with uncertainty—and possible rough seas
The main trade-off is that a wildlife cruise can’t control either sightings or the sea. If there are no sightings, the stated offer is a free return trip, subject to availability and valid for up to three years, rather than a refund. Travellers also describe rough water and seasickness on some outings. I’d think carefully about how you handle waves before committing, and keep expectations focused on the search itself, not a particular whale or a close encounter.

The ship sets sails from Reykjavík’s Old Harbour and during your journey, you’ll sail among the small islands in the Faxaflói Bay, as well as along the coast of Reykjavík, providing you with a fantastic view of the city as you search for the wildlife in the water.
The most common sights are minke and humpback whales, dolphins, and porpoises. However, there is always a chance to spot a few orcas (also known as killer whales) as well as a wealth of other species. The professional team onboard is very experienced in spotting whales and is dedicated to making sure their passengers leave with a smile!
Harpa is a concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavík, Iceland. The opening concert was held on May 4, 2011. The building features a distinctive colored glass facade inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland.
Faxafloi bay is situated on its southern shore. From Reykjavik it is possible to see the peninsula of Akranes in the northeast and even the Snæfellsjökull at a distance of about 120 km (75 mi). This bay has few islands and the ones it does have are close to land, in particular contrast to the bay directly north of it, Breiðafjörður, which has the most islands of any bay in Iceland.
Engey is the second largest island of the Kollafjörður (Faxa Bay) fjord in western Iceland.
Lundey, literally "Puffin Island" in Icelandic, is a small, uninhabited island off the western coast of Reykjavík, Iceland.
Viðey is the largest island of the Kollafjörður Bay in Iceland, near the capital of Reykjavík.
