Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
I’d choose this as a compact wildlife-focused break from Reykjavík rather than treating it as a major expedition. In one hour, the emphasis is on getting near Akurey’s rocky shore, watching from the boat and understanding what you are seeing through an English-speaking guide. It looks particularly well suited to travellers who want puffins without giving up a large part of the day, provided they accept that wild birds—and the weather—set the terms of the experience.
Who this short cruise suits best
My advice is to pick it if puffins are a priority but your Reykjavík itinerary is already full. The crossing to Akurey is described as only 15 minutes, leaving most of the hour for the island circuit and guided observation rather than a long journey at sea.
It should also work well for mixed-age groups looking for a relatively low-commitment outing: the activity is listed as suitable for all physical fitness levels, and binoculars are available on board. I’d still frame it to children as wildlife watching, not a guaranteed close encounter; the appeal is noticing birds nesting, flying and feeding in their natural setting.
Choose your date for puffins, not just convenience
I’d strongly favour a departure between May and early August if seeing puffins is the central reason for booking. Akurey’s nesting period is given as May to August, and late-season feedback makes the practical risk clear: by mid to late August, birds may already have left even though a cruise is still running.
That does not make a later sailing pointless if you enjoy seabirds and coastal time, since the guide may also point out fulmars, gulls, Arctic terns and black guillemots. But I think it is important to set the right expectation: whale sightings mentioned by travellers are a welcome possibility, not the purpose to plan around.
Make the short format work for your day
The five daily departure times, increasing to as many as seven from June to August, make this easy to place beside other Reykjavík plans. I’d choose an earlier slot if puffins are your main goal, simply because it leaves room to reschedule your day should weather disrupt the sailing; that is a planning preference, not a promise of better viewing.
Arrive with time to spare at the Special Tours ticket office: check-in and meeting the guide happen there, and the stated minimum is 10 minutes before departure. Since food and drinks are not included, I’d have a snack or meal separately rather than expecting the one-hour cruise to cover it.
Accept the weather and wildlife trade-off
This is not the choice for anyone who needs a fixed, guaranteed wildlife outcome. Sailings can be cancelled for bad weather or insufficient traveller numbers, and the refund policy allows a full refund when cancellation is made at least 24 hours before departure. Build a little flexibility into your Reykjavík schedule rather than placing it immediately before an unmovable onward plan.
Within the cruise itself, I’d value the guided element. Travellers repeatedly highlighted informative, friendly crews and useful puffin narration, which matters on a brief outing where context can make the difference between simply spotting birds and understanding their behaviour. The shared tour can have up to 33 travellers, so it is better for sociable, guided viewing than for a private or secluded boat experience.
