Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

I’d choose this as a more adventurous Northern Lights outing for travellers who value a smaller group, a 4x4 journey beyond Reykjavík’s glow and a guide actively adapting to the night’s conditions. It is not a guaranteed aurora show—and that uncertainty is exactly the planning point to accept before you go. The appeal is less about ticking off a fixed sight and more about giving yourself a comfortable, well-equipped evening to pursue a weather-dependent phenomenon.

Who I think this tour suits

This is a strong fit if you want the chase itself to be part of the experience. The super-jeep format is intended for rural gravel and mountain roads, rather than simply travelling out on a standard coach route, and the group is capped at 16 participants per guide. I’d favour it for couples, friends and solo travellers who enjoy a more intimate night outdoors and appreciate guide-led decisions about where to search.

It is less suitable if your priority is certainty, a tightly predictable evening or minimal time outside. Even with experienced route-finding, cloud cover and aurora activity remain outside anyone’s control.

Understand what the super jeep changes

I’d choose the super-jeep option when flexibility matters more than a conventional sightseeing feel. The itinerary allows the guide to select a viewing location according to that evening’s weather forecast, and traveller feedback points to multiple location attempts when cloud breaks need to be found. That can make the journey feel purposeful rather than passive, especially on a difficult night.

The trade-off is that the route is inherently not fixed. You should be happy to follow the conditions rather than expect named stops or a set sequence of landmarks. Think of this as a mobile sky search, not a scenic night tour with a guaranteed photography stop.

Plan for cold, waiting and some walking

My advice is to treat warmth as essential equipment, not an optional extra. The evening lasts about four hours, includes a moderate amount of walking, and requires warm, waterproof layers, a hat and gloves. Blankets, hand warmers and hot chocolate should make the wait more pleasant, but they do not replace proper outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.

I’d recommend it to reasonably mobile travellers who can enjoy standing outside and being patient for changing skies. The night may involve waiting rather than constant activity; that is often the practical reality of maximizing your chances.

Make peace with the weather contingency

The most important limitation is straightforward: departure can be cancelled late in the day if conditions are poor, and seeing the lights is not assured if the tour goes ahead. I’d keep the following evening free if possible, rather than booking this as your only chance. That gives the retry policy real value instead of turning it into a logistical disappointment.

A second attempt is available without charge when bad weather cancels the trip or no lights appear, subject to availability—but it is on a minibus rather than another super jeep. For me, that is a fair safety net, though it means the replacement experience may not have the same off-road flexibility.

Itinerary and highlights

Your Northern Lights adventure begins the moment our experienced guide collects you from your chosen pickup spot in Reykjavík, driving a specially equipped 4×4 super jeep designed for the journey ahead.

Once everyone is aboard, we’ll leave the glow of the city behind and venture into the vast, quiet darkness of Iceland’s countryside. As we search the skies for the Aurora Borealis, the route may take us past some of the country’s breathtaking natural landmarks—hidden in shadow but revealed by your guide’s keen eye and knowledge.

By traveling along less-traveled rural roads, we escape the crowds and enjoy a better chance of witnessing the Northern Lights in all their brilliance, along with the serene beauty of Iceland’s night sky.

When the conditions look right, your guide will choose the perfect viewing spot based on the evening’s weather forecasts. Then, it’s time to settle in and wait for nature’s show to unfold. The Northern Lights usually dance about 100 kilometers (60 miles) above the Earth’s surface—an otherworldly display born near the north magnetic pole. Watching ribbons of color sweep across the sky feels almost unearthly, as if the cosmos itself were painting over the night.

Be sure to dress warmly, as the Icelandic night air can be brisk. A fleece sweater or one of our cozy blankets will help keep the chill away while you wait. To make the moment even more comforting, we’ll serve you a steaming cup of cocoa paired with a sweet chocolate bite.

And when the aurora appears, you won’t just see it—you’ll have the memory captured forever. Our guides take photographs each time the Northern Lights reveal themselves, ensuring you’ll go home with your very own picture under the glowing sky.

We will end the adventure with a drop off in Reykjavík from your original pick up location.

Kindly note that the Northern Lights are natural phenomena that are difficult to predict, but our guides do everything in their power to ensure the best chances of seeing them.
