8-Day Summer Ring Route of Iceland with Snaefellsnes Peninsula

About this experience

This 8-day tour takes you to the must see Golden Circle route with all its amazing sites. You will see the unbeatable Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir geothermal area and of course the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir National Park. Next you will be heading to the much talked about South Coast, where you will explore the unique black sand beach, Reynisfjara and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. After exploring the Eastfjords, Lake Mývatn awaits with its unique surroundings, you will explore Dimmuborgir lava pillars and then carry on the journey to the capital of the North, Akureyri. From there you will head to West Iceland and Snæfellsnes Peninsula and find some hidden gems and locations to experience, such as Kirkjufell mountain, lava pillars, a white beach and waterfalls.

While you enjoy this versatile tour you will be able to book extra tours and activities along the way to make your experience even more special, such as horse riding, Vök baths and lava caving.

Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

I’d choose this eight-day circuit if you want Iceland’s headline landscapes without taking on the work of driving, booking a chain of overnight stops, or deciding how to link far-apart regions. It is a deliberately full itinerary rather than a slow stay: the appeal is the contrast between the Golden Circle, south-coast waterfalls and black sand, glacier country, the north and Snæfellsnes. For a first substantial trip, I think that breadth is a strong trade-off—provided you are happy to keep moving.

Who this route suits best

I’d recommend it to first-time Iceland visitors, couples, friends and solo travellers who value a guided overview over independence. The group is capped at 18, which should feel considerably less impersonal than a large coach circuit while still making this a shared, scheduled trip rather than a private road trip.

The active elements are a meaningful part of the experience, not an optional scenic backdrop: the programme includes an ice cave, glacier hike and whale-watching tour. The stated fitness level is easy, so it looks suitable for many travellers, but I’d still favour it for people comfortable being outdoors in changeable conditions and following a group’s pace. Children can join from age eight, though the amount of moving between sights makes it more appealing to families whose children enjoy busy days.

Choose it for range, not lingering time

This is the right choice if seeing Iceland’s major geological contrasts matters more to you than spending a whole afternoon at any single waterfall, village or beach. On the early days alone, the schedule combines several South Coast stops with a three-hour ice-cave visit, then a glacier hike and lagoon boat ride the following day. Expect satisfying variety, but not a self-paced exploration of each place.

My advice is to protect your energy for the included activities rather than treating every stop as a mission to cover every viewpoint. The itinerary gives defined visiting periods at several attractions, so arriving ready to walk, photograph and return on time will make the rhythm feel enjoyable rather than rushed.

Plan around the moving overnight rhythm

I’d pack with one-night stays in mind. Breakfast is included on seven mornings and the listed early accommodation uses three-star hotels with private bathrooms, which creates a practical base, but this is not a holiday built around settling into one hotel. A compact, orderly bag and clothes you can reuse will make the daily transitions easier.

There is a real upside to this pace: you wake up near the next region rather than repeatedly backtracking. Still, I think travellers who want late mornings, long restaurant dinners or unstructured evenings should consider whether an eight-day escorted circuit fits their preferred travel style. Lunch and dinner are not included, so leave room in your daily plans and budget for those decisions.

Make the optional extras selective

Horse riding, Vök Baths and lava caving are additional possibilities, but I’d choose only the one that most changes your personal idea of Iceland. The core tour already has a substantial activity mix, so adding everything could turn a varied week into an exhausting one. Baths make most sense to me for someone who wants a restorative contrast to long sightseeing days; horse riding or lava caving suit travellers seeking another active or underground experience.

For the included glacier hike, safety equipment is covered, while hiking boots and waterproof outer layers appear separately as rentals. I’d bring suitable weatherproof layers and footwear if you already own them, both to simplify the day and to avoid relying on additional rentals.
